David Taran is a real estate expert and entrepreneur based in San Francisco, California. He’s the founder and CEO of Sunstar Capital. He brings more than 26 years of professional experience to Sunstar Capital, extending to all phases of the investment process from investment strategy and sourcing opportunities to structuring, negotiating, acquiring, financing, owning, reporting, entitling, developing, redeveloping, constructing, managing, operating, leasing and disposition of investments.
Over his career, David Taran has assembled a diverse portfolio of institutional grade properties throughout the United States, acquiring approximately $2.3 billion in real estate, including 13.8 million square feet of buildings, 700 acres of land, 449 hotel rooms and 1,800 multi-family residential units.
In his previous role at Divco West Properties, where he served as the co-founder and co-CEO, David Taran’s primary responsibilities included: acquiring, managing, and developing properties. Strategizing for how to best invest in real estate is one of Mr. Taran’s many strengths. Throughout his career as a real estate investor, David has built up an impressive return on investments for his stakeholders.
Prior to forming Sunstar Capital and its predecessors, David Taran was a managing partner of his family’s global manufacturing and retailing business where his responsibilities included: strategic and financial planning, sales, treasury, capital investments, business and real estate acquisitions and negotiations, currency trading, and hedging and management.
David Taran was a practicing attorney at Graham & James in Los Angeles where he specialized in real estate, corporate, and tax law. He holds a DEC degree from McGill University, a law degree (L.L.L.) from the University of Ottawa, a law degree (J.D.) from Columbia University, and a Masters in Tax Law degree (L.L.M.) from New York University. David Taran has been admitted to the bars of California, New York, Florida, and Quebec and has published numerous articles on real estate and tax law.
David Taran is also a board member for the thriving non-profit organization, Project Happiness. The organization was founded by his wife, Randy Taran, and is currently led by her as well. The organization works to help individuals all of ages to develop sustainable strategies to live their happiest life. Mr. Taran is thrilled to provide strategic planning and innovative ideas to help the organization reach even more people.
In addition to this role, David Taran also spends a lot of his free time reading books or writing. His main focus is on all things centered around positivity and optimism – two areas that he holds in great importance in his life. In order to achieve this level of positivity, David Taran relies on yoga and meditation. He has completed teacher trainings in both Hatha, Kundalini, Buddhi, and Universal yoga. Not everyone may find mindfulness through yoga and meditation, which is why Mr. Taran stresses that people find other strategies in order to produce this positivity within themselves.
